Born in Ivano-Frankovsk in 1948, Svetlana Alexievich spent most of her life in the Soviet Union and present-day Belarus, along with prolonged periods of exile in Western Europe. Starting her writing career as a journalist, she soon developed her distinct style of non-fiction, bringing together a chorus of voices to describe a specific historical moment. Svetlana Alexievich and her work have received numerous accolades, and in 2015 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Bela Shayevich is a Soviet-American artist and translator.
