The Gardens

ENTRY TO THE GARDENS IS FREE!

Uniquely positioned where three counties meet, the 7 acres of lawn and borders of Burford House Gardens sweep along the banks of the picturesque River Teme.

The garden is reasonably relaxed in its appearance these days and following 2 very harsh winters parts of it are having to undergo a ‘natural resoration’, which takes time.  Sadly we have lost a number of mature trees, numerous clematis and other fine specimens over the past 3 years.  We prefer to not charge an admittance fee any more, so please be accepting of a few more weeds in the high season.

There are some 2000 other varieties of plants, including one of the garden’s great wonders, the giant Wisteria macrobotrys ‘Burford’, which in May cascades spectacularly down the back of the house. Planted originally in 1960, it fills the air with divine perfume, and the racemes hang sometimes two feet in length. Other highlights include the unusual Acanthus hungaricus, which look splendid in mid to late summer.

A Georgian turfed bridge spans the Ledwyche Brook and takes you to an area of wildflowers, trees and meadow, offering contrast to the intensively nurtured gardens around the house. The Burford Garden Company is responsible for the gardens and strives to uphold the traditions set by John Treasure in this dynamic garden.

The gardens are open every day all year, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day from 10am to 5pm (closing at dusk if earlier).
