Cotswold Hare Trail 2017

The Cirencester March Hare Festival comes to Burford!

As you know Burford Garden Company supports as many local charitable causes as we can. We also like something a little unusual. So we were delighted to be approached by the Cotswold Hare Trail organisers and asked to sponsor a hare.

What's this all about? The Cirencester March Hare Festival was initiated by the hugely creative Florence Beetlestone, it was launched in 2014 to promote public art as a means of charitable fund raising. The hare sculptures, of varying sizes, are teamed up with a sponsor, who then enlists an artist to adorn, decorate and design the hare. Once they have been completed they are auctioned for charity. The hare was chosen because of its links to the area since Roman times.

After three years in Cirencester, in 2017 the Festival is moving out to wider territory. This year the Festival will feature a new Cotswold Trail, based around hare sculptures in more than 20 towns and villages across the Cotswolds, providing a cohesive tour around all the beautiful places to be explored.

The Trail is free to everyone and care is taken to promote a high degree of accessibility, particularly by groups who would not normally participate in such events. The Festival's key aims are to promote public art, community involvement, environmental awareness, tourism, promote local businesses and to raise money for charity, all in a fun and enjoyable way.

In 2017 the hares will be decorated as historical figures, landscape or architecture, and they will be placed in positions that will highlight our Cotswold heritage (hare-itage!). These sculptures will be auctioned in October at the end of the Festival, with the net profits going to a chosen charity/ies each year. At the last auction over £73,500 was raised for the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. In 2017 proceeds will go to National Star and to local historical projects within those Cotswold Towns on the trail.

Burford Garden Company are delighted to not only be a custodian of a Hare but also to be opening our doors to artists, charities and sponsors alike to all get behind this great cause for th e pre-launch event on 9th March 2017. The March Hare Festival launch will take place on 25th March and will run until 10th September. Watch this space for further details, and for updates on our very own Burford Hare!
