Eleanor Johnson at Paul Smith

There is a Rapture on the Lonely Shore

Inspired stylistically and thematically by the Baroque, Renaissance and Rococo periods, Eleanor's paintings consider the intangible zone between absence and presence, not only visually, but also physically and psychologically. Thematically, the body and nature dominate as subjects in her work, best outlined in a recent series named 'Modern Bathers', in which these subjects and their ancient, fluctuating relationship is explored. Her "imagined compositions" take visual fragments from Old Master paintings, infusing them with images of her own, to create scenes that suggest an anachronistic idyll reworked in a current and contemporary context.

Eleanor Johnson is an artist based in London and is currently undertaking a Masters in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School.
