Delphiniums are the stalwart of the cottage garden, shimmering above other plants at the back of herbaceous borders due to the height of their flower spikes, at well over a metre. Their blue, pink, purple and lavender semi-double flowers are beautifully set off by the colour of Cotswold stone or weather-softened lap fencing. The foliage is also attractive, forming mounds of prettily cut leaves.
