These imposing containers lean towards garden architecture rather than being simple pots. They look magnificent planted up, but they also make a statement. The terracotta Orcio Panciuto Pots are decorated with raised, stylised roses, resembling a Tudor rose, and applied bands of incised terracotta.
Orcio Panciuto (baldly translated), means bulging jars, and while this is strictly speaking true, these Tuscan pots are much more. The word orcio comes from the Latin word for jar and the wonderfully rounded shape of these jars with their vestigial handles conjure up a classical precedence reaching back even further to ancient Greece.
These pots are made from natural Galestro clay, local to the area in Tuscany where they are made, so they contain only naturally occurring chemicals and are ecologically sound. Made by traditionally skilled artisans, once fired the pots are robust but remain porous, making them a particularly sympathetic container for plants.
