Small, bearded carving axe for carpenters and sculptors. For particularly detailed work, hold it right up at the top. The slender, straight shaft of white oak (Quercus myrsinifolia) supports a quality forged ductile steel head with a flat toe (the top of the head) and an exaggerated curve to the beard (the bottom) to give a longer edge, for precision work.
The small bearded axe made in Sanjo, Niigata has a lighter feel than Western versions, and has a beautifully balanced longer haft (the handle).
A small wedge in the eye of the axe can be hammered in if necessary to tighten the head onto the shaft.
