Acer shirasawanum Moonrise is a woody, deciduous tree that bears purple-red flowers in early to mid spring. The bright, coral red spring foliage becomes lime green in summer, turning a richer green as it ages. Then it bears red winged fruit that attract birds in late summer, followed by great autumn colours of red and orange.
This compact, rounded shrub will provide a beautiful focal point in a small garden, or, in larger spaces, can be used to illuminate a partially shaded border. Like all acers, it is happiest in shade, but is far more sun tolerant than most. The striking foliage is best where it is protected from cold, drying winds and excessive sun and, to this end, can even be grown in a large pot.
