This small, fruitful tree with gracefully arching branches offers so much. In mid-spring it produces sprays of rich, deep pink blossom, which provides not only a visual treat, but has a wonderful fragrance. The blooms mature to produce deep purple fruits, which, if not harvested, hang onto the branches well into the autumn. Crab apples, being high in pectin, make the most marvellous conserves, particularly – due to the colour – jewel-like jelly.
There is more: the foliage of Malus Toringo Scarlett is also valued for its colour. The pointed leaves emerge purple-tinted and mature to a deep green before taking on majestic purple, red and yellow tints in autumn.
