New for 2018 is this spectacular Flowering Crab Apple, Malus toringo Aros, the Best in Show award winner at the National Plant Show. In spring it is adorned with large blossom in a bold dark pink, with white striations emanating from the central red stamens and pistils. The foliage emerges at the same time as the blossom. The dark purple, nearly black leaves are brighter red when newly unfurled, and take on a hint of green as they age. In the autumn there is an abundance of small, rich red fruit that persist into the winter.
A lovely small, specimen tree with unusual, strong colour and a long season of interest, with spring flowers, summer foliage and autumn fruit. It also has good disease resistance. Its compact nature and tight columnar habit make it the perfect choice for smaller gardens and container planting.
This outstanding new ornamental crabapple (sometimes listed as Malus sieboldii Aros) has been bred in Denmark by Karsten Jensen, a passionate and knowledgeable plantsman and nurseryman.
