Better known as the Purple Smoke Bush, this large deciduous shrub produces smoke-like plumes of wispy pink flower heads in summer, above attractive purple oval foliage, which darkens to deep purple until it turns vibrant tones of scarlet red in the autumn.
This is an extemely tough and robust plant, succeeding in all reasonable aspects. A tall plant with three-season interest, ideal for the back of a border. Prune it back hard to induce dense growth and prevent it becoming tall and woody.
Interestingly, Cotinus comes from the Greek for wild olive (kotinus).
A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.
