The rich, plum colour of this perennial poppy make it a charming alternative to the bright red poppy so redolent of cottage gardens. Here the crushed-silk effect petals open to reveal a sumptuously dark centre, exaggerated by almost black markings on the interior of the petals. Although the blooms are ephemeral, each plant will produce several magnificent flowers which, if cut back once they have gone over, will often produce a second flush of flowers later in the season. Bees also find these flowers highly attractive.
An oriental poppy, Papaver Patty’s Plum has copious bristly, grey/green foliage, the deeply cut outline of which provides structure in the border as an attractive foil to other herbaceous planting, for example sedums or penstemons. Support may be required as the plant grows larger. The fast-growing foliage will naturally die back in the autumn.
