The popular Vaccinium corymbosum Chandler is a mid- to late season 'Highbush' variety of blueberry, producing high yields of slightly flattened light blue, juicy berries with a definite flavour. The berries are large, in fact this is the largest blueberry! Even better, there is a long ripening season, so you will be picking for six weeks from early summer.
Lovely trumpet-shaped and sweetly scented creamy-white flowers in the spring are self-fertile, and perfect for pollinators. As the days shorten, the stems redden and the leaves turn fiery crimson, giving extra autumn interest.
Blueberries are packed with vitamin C, high in dietary fibre and an excellent source of manganese. Chandler makes delicious jams, jellies and desserts, and the fruits freeze well.
Chandler is a fast-growing plant, with a slightly spreading habit, and makes a lovely edible hedge.
