Swaying in the breeze blowing across the prairies, Panicum virgatum – known as Switchgrass – would once have been a familiar sight in the Midwest of North America. This variety of ornamental grass, P. virgatum Warrior, is also a compelling candidate for British gardens. Elegant panicles of flowers hang in mesmerizing purple clouds well above the green summer foliage, which in turn, warms to gratifying shades of red, orange and yellow in the autumn. Plant as a graceful, deep-rooting, backdrop in a border, or as an integral part of a prairie planting scheme.
