Polystichum setiferum is known as the Soft Shield Fern due to the shape of its handsome, open fronds. Springing from a rosette-form base, the fern grows into a huge shuttlecock shape as the fronds develop, each frond reaching up to and over a metre in height. The mature foliage is leathery in texture, exaggerating the neatly toothed edges of the fronds.
Ferns are ideally planted in full or partial shade in moist soil, their evergreen foliage adding visual and tactile interest to dark corners of the garden. Underplant with spring bulbs in the autumn, then cut away the fronds in late January to reveal the flowering bulbs, before the intriguing curled fronds of the juvenile ferns start to unfurl in late spring.
