A hardy and sturdy deciduous tree, Carpinus betulus features mid-green leaves which turn yellow and orange in autumn. Like the beech tree, this British native is often used in hedging because it retains its autumn leaves until new growth appears in spring. It is also the tree traditionally used in a pleached hedge.
