Also known as Helleborus niger Pirouette and Helleborus × hybridus Pirouette, Helleborus x ericsmithii Pirouette is a new evergreen or semi-evergreen hybrid hellebore. It is vigorous, forming a low mound of large, leathery dark green leaves, and flowers prolifically over a lengthy period from mid-winter to mid-spring. The lovely white flowers, tinged with pink, open from pink buds, and mature to various shades of soft dusky pink.
A useful low-growing perennial for ground cover, especially under deciduous trees, as once established it is tolerant of dry shade; the flowers are sterile so it doesn't set seed. Ideal planted with early flowering bulbs and other dappled-shade loving plants like ferns, tiarellas, alchemillas and hostas to create a woodland effect. Hellebores also provide a valuable source of nectar to foraging insects, especially bees, when little else is in flower.
Both the flowers and the rich green leaves last well in cut flower arrangements.
