From late spring into summer, the dark, erect stems of Astrantia major Star of Beauty bear pincushion-like umbels of rich magenta flowers surrounded by prominent, grey-tipped, purple bracts with white centres.
Astrantia are clump-forming herbaceous perennials that can be placed in any aspect with full sun or partial shade. They grow well in poorly draining soil, but grow best in moist but well-drained soil. Also good for native pollinators.
A lovely cottage garden plant. Also an exceptionally good cut flower.
