Bergenia Rose Crystal is a deeply coloured variety of this popular, rhizomatous plant. Bergenias are commonly known as Elephants' Ears, due to the shape of their wonderfully large, fleshly leaves, which are particularly valued in the garden because they are evergreen.
These plants originally came from central Asia, but because they are so forgiving – they tolerate sun and shade as well as drought conditions – they have adapted beautifully to the British climate and look lovely tumbling down beside stone steps, planted in gravel gardens or containers, as well as more typically edging borders.
