This new variety of echinacea, Delicious Nougat (synonym Noecthree), is a compact double coneflower with daisy-like flowers. The petals droop elegantly down from the cone as the flowers mature to a creamy-white. The cone itself comprises a tactile mass of tiny florets which, as they develop, change from green to creamy-white and form a satisfying ‘pom-pom’ effect.
Deep green, hairy foliage makes this a useful clump-forming perennial, especially in a sunny border. The stout stems of the flowers make them perfect for cutting for arrangements, or leave them in situ to add interest to the autumn border. The cones will attract butterflies in the summer and seed-eating birds later in the year.
Due to the current concerns about our native hedgehog population, it is pleasing to note that the name Echinacea comes from the Ancient Greek word ekhinos, meaning hedgehog; it is easy to see why!
