Echinacea Mooodz Sympathy provides jewel-like colour in the border from late June to September. The daisy-like blooms of this coneflower are lavishly coloured, opening as pink-tinged orange. The petals, with prettily tripartite incisions to the ends, droop elegantly down from the cone as the flowers mature. The cone itself comprises a tactile mass of tiny florets which, as they develop, form a satisfying ‘pom-pom’ effect.
Deep green, hairy foliage adds to the joy of this clump-forming perennial. The long stems of the flowers make them perfect for cutting for arrangements, or leave them in situ to add interest to the autumn border. The cones will attract butterflies in the summer and seed-eating birds later in the year.
Due to the current concerns about our native hedgehog population, it is pleasing to note that the name Echinacea comes from the Ancient Greek word ekhinos, meaning hedgehog; it is easy to see why!
