From midsummer through to early autumn, Helenium autumnale Short 'n Sassy will flood the front of your border with a continual glow of warmth. The flowers are rich in colour and have a deep brown, velvety central cone that is irresistibly tactile. The edges of the cone are punctuated with tiny dots of bright yellow. The main petals are prettily incised and radiate daisy-like around the central cone, shading from dark orange to golden yellow, creating a pleasing sunburst effect.
This low-growing perennial supports the flower heads on sturdy stems (making them ideal for arrangements), and has simple but attractively lance-shaped leaves. Traditionally the leaves were dried and used in snuff, hence its common name: Sneezewort.
Plant in your border or a suitable container for an instant burst of sunshine and watch as H. autumnale Short and Sassy attracts pollinators to your garden.
