Also known as Russian Sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire is a useful perennial for late summer colour. Named after the Russian count who first introduced it to Western gardens, this aromatic sub-shrub comes from Afghanistan and the Himalayas. Its tiny, violet-blue, tubular flowers appear on silver-grey spikes from August, forming a haze above deeply divided grey-green leaves that smell of both sage and lavender (and attract pollinating insects).
Perovskia is the ideal companion plant for ornamental grasses or other silver-leaved perennials. Plant in swathes in a sunny border. Pair with spring bulbs to make the most of the space. Russian Sage loves the sun, and regrows each year from a woody base.
A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.
