Rosa Gabriel Oak® (shrub rose)

Currently Out of Stock

This arrestingly beautiful English shrub rose was launched at the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show as part of David Austin's Secret Garden themed display. As befits its name, Rosa Gabriel Oak® (Auscrowd) is robust and vigorous Its attractive dark green foliage forms a well-rounded shrub with mulberry tinted stems, providing the perfect foil for the blooms. Of the deepest, richest pink, the large and free flowering blooms are many petalled and arranged in a rosette. The outer petals pale slightly as the bloom matures. Typical of David Austin's roses, the scent is an integral part of the overall effect, in this case a strong, delightfully fruity fragrance.

In common with other English shrub roses, R. Gabriel Oak® can be planted singly in flower borders or group planted in threes, for example, in rose borders where they grow attractively together to form what appears to be a single dense area of continually flowering dark pink. The rose will also thrive if planted in a suitably large container.

This striking rose is appropriately named after the stalwart hero of Thomas Hardy’s Victorian novel, Far from the Madding Crowd. In this, the most optimistic of Hardy’s love stories, Gabriel Oak is portrayed as the enduring friend of the headstrong and beautiful farmer Bathsheba Everdene, whom, after many vicissitudes, he eventually marries.
