An outstanding English shrub rose from David Austin, Rosa Port Sunlight (Auslofty), is a wonderfully hardy and healthy variety with masses of foliage, which is attractively bronze-tinted when young. The abundant rose buds open into medium sized, quartered rosettes of rich apricot, which soften in tone towards the outer edges. These particularly pretty roses are especially valued because they repeat flower right into autumn and the first frost.
This wonderfully sunny rose is named after Port Sunlight, the model village set up in 1881 in the Wirral by the Lever family. Designed stylistically following the Arts and Crafts movement, the ethos behind the village itself was to provide good housing for the workers in the Lever soap factory (eventually Unilever). The idealistic village also included a rose garden, filled now, we hope, with this special rose.
