Sarcococca hookeriana Winter Gem is a dwarf evergreen shrub with an upright habit, green stems, and narrow lance-shaped, glossy mid-green leaves. In winter, the inconspicuous, sweetly vanilla scented, creamy-white flowers, that form from red buds, are followed by glossy black berries that may persist into the following winter.
Plant by an entrance or path to best appreciate the fragrance. Sarcococca works well in pots, so is useful positioned near a north facing doorway. In borders, plant in threes to fill gaps. Tough and reliable, it is a good plant for ground cover, especially on awkward slopes and banks. It also copes well with dry shade and urban pollution.
