The Black Pussy Willow (Salix gracilistyla Melanostachys) is one of the joys of early spring. On the wine-coloured branches of the male plant, sleek, tactile catkins appear, reminiscent of tiny bearskin caps. As they mature, these furry catkins produce anthers which start red and turn bright yellow as the pollen develops.
This Salix is bushy in habit and produces, unusually for a willow, larger, ovate, glossy leaves. The overall effect is beautiful in a cottage garden at the back of a sunny border or in a container in a courtyard; the shrub is also a favourite for the cutting garden.
