Lilacs are a favourite cottage garden specimen plant, with their towering spires of flowers in spring in shades of whites, pinks and purples. Easy to grow and requiring little maintenance. A deciduous shrub or small tree, it works well in a corner or by a wall ot gate. Lilacs have a beautiful, heady fragrance that attracts butterflies.

Syringa vulgaris Souvenir de Louis Spaeth is a rich violet coloured variety of this deciduous shrub. It is now known as S. vulgaris Andenken an Ludwig Spath’, a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.
