Formerly known as montbretias, crocosmias are cheerful deciduous cormous perennials producing masses of freesia-like blooms, with the individual flowers held in a line on tall, arching, branched stems in late summer and autumn. Less bold than the well-known Crocosmia Lucifer with its strong red colour, Emily McKenzie is a particlarly beautiful variety with mahogony throated deep-orange flowers that emerge from purple buds. Unusually for montbretias, these flowers are open and flat, shaped like star rather than the more usual lily-style funnels. They are rich in pollen and popular with pollinating insects including bees.

An excellent choice for sunny, well-drained sites and ideally situated in the middle of a border or at the front where it can overhang a lawn or path. Ideal as part of a 'hot' garden planting scheme, in a large swathe, or try in a tall planter as a centrepiece. This lovely late flowering corm has a compact form with a bushy habit. It will quickly divide and form a large clump of sword-like leaves. It is easy to forget that crocosmias make elegant cut flowers in larger arrangements.
