From its name you could anticipate the deliciously creamy tone of Dahlia Café au Lait, but the luxuriance of the flower is unexpected. From an almost luminescent, lime green flower bud emerge beautifully pink tinged petals which, as they mature, become creamier in tone. As the fully double flower head unfurls, it reveals layer upon layer of perfectly symmetrical, graduated petals, cylindrically folded in upon themselves as they move towards the centre.
Plant this D. Café au Lait in a sunny, sheltered border, where its attractive mound-forming foliage will provide a lovely foil to the flowers. If you wish, as soon as the flowers are fully open, cut them for an overwhelmingly beautiful arrangement, which visually sweeps the richness of the late summer garden into the house.
One of Mexico’s greatest gifts to the world is the Arabica coffee bean, grown in the coastal area of Guatemala. The other is the dahlia, which, native to the country, is also the national plant. So, D. Café au Lait is the perfect combination of the two but, flowering from midsummer to autumn, the transformative effect is longer lasting than a shot of caffeine!
