Lilium regale is a tall and vigorous bulbous perennial with narrow glossy green leaves and racemes of huge, trumpet-shaped white flowers – with yellow centres, orange anthers and petals flushed with pink – that are up to an astonishing 14cm long.

Hailing from south west China, this is a popular lily bulb. Marvellous as a cut flower, but first remove the pollen-laden stamens to avoid stains.

With a magnificently heady fragrance and splendid height, plant in a prominent position where it will attract the eye as well as the nose. It dislikes heavy soil, so plant into grit if necessary.
