This gloriously crisp, white perennial is a comparative, but very welcome, newcomer to the cottage garden and herbaceous border. Physostegia virginiana Crystal Peak White has tubular, lipped blooms resembling more orderly antirrhinum (snapdragon) flowers, arranged in upright spires on rich, deep green foliage. Frequently described as ‘obedient’, its only questionable habit is a tendency to spread, which can be thwarted in the autumn. Attractive to pollinators and butterflies, the cut flowers are also wonderful in arrangements.
