This compact, deciduous Japanese Quince – Chaenomeles speciosa Rubra – is a spreading shrub, with spiny branches bearing glossy, ovate leaves. In the late winter to early spring, it produces prettily cup-shaped, five-petalled flowers in a spectacular scarlet. The aromatic, green-yellow fruit that follows in late summer is traditionally used to make preserves and jellies.
There are notable advantages: Chaenomeles is ideal for a small garden, the flowering stems make dramatic, indoor flower arrangements, characteristic of ikebana (Japanese flower arrangements), and the flowers attract pollinating insects at a crucially early point.
