This variegated variety of our native Holly, Ilex aquifolium Silver Queen, is highly decorative and produces attractive, pink-tinted new growth. It is also a very robust and useful garden plant, producing red berries and providing, if required, tough, animal-proof hedging. To confirm this excellence, it has received the RHS's Award of Garden Merit.
The evergreen foliage is attractively spiny with a glossy appearance and can be cultivated as a small tree or regularly clipped hard as a dense shrub or hedge. The female form will set masses of red berries if pollinated by a male form. The berries also feed thrushes in the winter or can be cut for natural Christmas decorations.
