Featuring glossy, spiky green foliage and erect racemes of yellow flowers in winter through to spring, Mahonia x media 'Winter Sun' is a great choice for a feature plant in a shady spot. The flowers give out a delicious honey scent, and are a valuable source of nectar for winter-active pollinating insects. They are followed by bunches of ornamental blue-black berries.
Also known as Mahonia × wagneri 'Winter Sun', this is a medium-sized, bushy, evergreen shrub. It is fast growing, but takes a decade or two to reach its full expanse. It can be leggy, but that is easily concealed by underplanting with shade-loveing perennials and bulbs.
