This compact, hardy, deciduous shrub is perfect for the back of a sunny border. It will not take over and its delicate foliage with silvery grey undersides provides a delightful foil for herbaceous summer flowers.
Most people, however, plant Salix gracilistyla 'Mount Aso' for the utterly charming catkins that appear in the late winter, early spring. Also sknown as Japanese Pink Pussy Willow, the catkins of S. 'Mount Aso' are the softest of pinks with a grey fuzzy texture as soft as mink; it is at once pretty and irresistibly tactile, and hugely cheering at the end of winter.
(In case you were wondering, Mount Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan, last erupted in 2016.)
