Skimmia provides a colourful winter display. Skimmia Rubella is an attractive evergreen shrub that produces abundant of clusters of burgundy-red flower buds in autumn, which open as small white flowers in spring. The shapely leaves of the evergreen foliage provide a glossy, dark foil.

One of the best choices for planting in a patio pot and shady area. The lovely, vibrant flower buds of the male plant appear in September and remain closed on the plant all winter – they resemble tiny red berries. In spring they open into fragrant, blush-pink blooms; the female plant produces bright red berries in the autumn.

Skimmia is not suitable for lime or chalk soils, so is best cultivated in pots with ericaceous compost in these regions.
