The Grammar of Spice is a recipe book you will be happy to have on your coffee table. By Caz Hildebrand, one of the Creative Partners at Here Design, is the designer of Nigella Lawson's sumptuous cookbooks, as well as those by Sam and Sam of Moro and Yotam Ottolenghi, this book is as much about design as about food. It is strikingly illustrated throughout with fabulous coloured reproductions of designs taken from Owen Jones's 1856 The Grammar of Ornament, each subjectively paired to the spices themselves. It is even lovely to hold, as the the cover is embossed and soft to touch.
Each spice is discussed in alphabetical order of scientific name (with the common name given too), covering many of our most familiar spices plus quite a few that will be new to you. The origins, history, taste and uses of each around the world are given, plus suggestions of foods to try it with.
Caz Hildebrand's The Grammar of Spice celebrates the diverse and exotic world of spices, which enrich our food and our lives, rather like the ornamental designs of Owen Jones's book that inspired it.
