Fruits soaked in spirits are the ultimate festive treat! Rumtopf, a traditional Austrian, German and Danish dessert of mixed fruit and alcohol, is traditionally eaten around Christmas. Summer fruits are preserved in sugar and a rather high potency rum, this allowed people to preserve summer fruit harvests for the bleaker produce months. Soaking begins in the spring and carries on throughout the year; as more fruit comes into season additional layers are added to the rumtopf jar.
These spirited fruits are great served on top of ice cream or pancakes, used to top a cheesecake, or even eaten on their own!
