From Field and Forest: An Artist’s Year in Paint and Pen
By Anna Koska
Within this artistic journal, well respected illustrator, Anna Koska, celebrates the natural world, from the changing of the seasons to the splendour of nature's simplicity. Image and narrative are wedded to create an enthralling journey through the seasons, as Koska draws our attention to the beautiful eccentricity of the natural world.
Separated into four sections; Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer, Koska wonderfully captures the particular motifs displayed with each time of the year. Inspired by the flora around East Sussex, each season contains various illustrations in watercolour, pen and ink, oils, and luscious egg tempera. Due to her approach towards illustration, each one possesses a very minimalist style and neutral colour palette, echoing the elegance within nature's simplicity. Accompanying these images are Koska’s own musings and observations on the fauna and flora depicted.
Each beautiful anecdote brings her illustrations to life. Her piece titled, Millpond, for example enthrals us with the comings and goings of birds around a pond. Koska alludes to the space even being reminiscent of a “small-town Netflix series”, with the geese and ducks providing romance, humour, and cliff-hangers. Pause to admire and appreciate the intricacy and significance of everyday occurrences within nature, from a cool winter sky to a buzzing hornet in the heat of summer, as this journal proves there really is beauty all around.
