The Writer's Map: An Atlas of Imaginary Lands
edited by Huw Lewis-Jones
From early childhood, books offer fantastical maps as guides to the imagination. Maps of the Hundred Acre Wood and Moominland, of Narnia and, more recently, Harry Potter’s Marauder’s Map, lead us into an enchanted world, helping us create a vision that continues into adulthood.
In The Writer’s Map, Huw Lewis-Jones has selected internationally acclaimed cartographers and authors to reveal the inspiration behind, and the processes involved in, the creation of their literary wonderlands. The book comprises explanatory essays revealing the thinking behind the maps. Corresponding illustrations show historical examples, alongside preliminary sketches (some previously unpublished), allowing glimpses into their creators’ minds.
This atlas includes maps from such experts as David Mitchel, author of Cloud Atlas, via the extraordinary medieval Mappa Mundi, to the map made for the 2012 film of Tolkein’s The Hobbit and much in between. For the armchair traveller, this erudite atlas offers illuminating flights of fancy. But always beware, here there be monsters….
