The intricate pattern of this wood block print from Rajasthan points to its Mogul legacy, a tradition rich with naturalism. Captured within a restrained, symmetrical grid, the serpentine foliage and stylised flower heads explode with life and colour – soft pink, red and green – across the cushion. Deep green corner tassels continue the luxurious, Bohemian feel.
This striking Deoli Salsa Cushion is named after an ancient village in Rajasthan awash with temples, which later became a centre of pilgrimage; appropriately the name derives from the Hindi word meaning ‘place of worship’. More recently the area produces a type of stone called green slate Deoli, mined for its shimmering, silvery green colour. The refined green tones used in this block print recall the natural colour of the slate.
