In brief, in the early 16th Century the Moguls took Delhi and Agra, and gradually spread south across India, with them went their love of botanical art. Over time a highly decorative style emerged, with instantly recognisable organic motifs. A case in point is the familiar, lozenge-shaped paisley pattern on this Kollam Blush Cushion.
Here paisley has been given a contemporary twist, the detail has been pared away leaving a simplified floral form with a crisp outline and clear but warm colours – pinks and olive green – on cream background. Classical enough to complement a traditional interior, these cushions will sing out in a more modern setting. Throw some on a stripped pine bench or a plain bedspread for instant effect.
It is appropriate that these cushions are named after Kollam. Positioned on the most southerly point of India, the Port of Kollam has been a strategic focus since the time of the Phoenicians and as such has absorbed and transmitted different cultural ideas for centuries.
