The vibrant design on this block-printed Indian cushion has been named after the Komati, an influential group of merchants dating back to the 11th century, from Central and Southern India. Here the print maker has revisited the much-loved carnation motif, in pink and verdigris against a rich umber or olive background. The result is both traditional and modern, providing the perfect detail for many different interiors.
Probably initiated in China, it was in India that wood block printing was perfected, due to a remarkable expertise in the use of vegetable dyes. Over the centuries these highly skilled Indian printers, called Chippas, were greatly esteemed. Their remarkable artistry in carving the hardwood blocks and then using them to print fabric has passed down the generations.
