Probably initiated in China, it was in India that wood block printing was perfected, due to a remarkable expertise in the use of vegetable dyes. Over the centuries these highly skilled Indian printers, called Chippas, were greatly esteemed. Their exceptional artistry in carving the hardwood blocks and then using them to print fabric has passed down the generations.
Following this ancient tradition, this Leela (loosely translated from Sanskrit as ‘divine play’) cushion in China Blue is a joyful invitation to relax. Printed with a mass of vines and flowerheads, which playfully sprawl over the cushion in a naturalistic profusion, the fabric reflects the designs of the Mogul Empire and William Morris.
