The wood blocks for this wonderfully airy floral design were created by hand, the printing also. Weaving across the surface of the Sitapur Topaz Cushion is a riot of stylised clematis, chrysanthemums and cinquefoil, accompanied by elegant, but delightfully disassociated foliage. The animated and colourful result nods to the Mogul botanical traditional and the work of William Morris, but with a blast of fresh air from the Himalayas. One or two Sitapur cushions would rejuvinate a sofa, or bed.
The pattern is so-called for a good reason. To the North of India in Uttar Pradesh is the city of Sitapur. Named after Lord Rama’s wife Sita, it is an important centre of Hindu pilgrimage and is also associated with the ancient Sanskrit epic poem Mahabharata. During the 17th and 18th centuries, however, its textile industry flourished and its materials were widely exported.
