An extremely versatile piece of furniture this Kilim Bench has all the glamour and warmth of antique furniture, with the advantage of being brand new. It is ideal for casual seating in a reception room or study, or placed in a window recess, becoming a movable window seat. These benches often double as coffee tables, providing a stable surface for drinks trays, tea trays and piles of books or magazines.
Beneath the kilim the upholstered seat is not sprung but is generously padded, the bottom of the bench is finished with a continuous single row of brass tacks and the sturdy wooden legs are decoratively turned and varnished.
Kilims – hand-woven, woollen rugs without a knotted pile – have been made in Turkey for centuries. A crucial part of nomadic life, they lined (and line) the floors and walls of tents as well as houses, and were highly valued as dowry pieces. Not only are they attractive, but they are famously hardwearing and as a result ideal for upholstery.
