Kilim Bench - Pattern and Stripes

Add to wish list

Traditionally, hand-woven into kilim furniture are decorative motifs, thought to signify desires or serve as protective symbols. This bench has been decorated with the Goz motif, an intricate, geometric diamond design, intended to protect against the distinctive evil eye symbol we see in Turkish culture.

Kilims – hand-woven, woollen rugs without a knotted pile – have been made in Turkey for centuries. A crucial part of nomadic life, they lined (and line) the floors and walls of tents as well as houses and were highly valued as dowry pieces. Not only are they attractive, but they are famously hardwearing, and as a result, ideal for upholstery. Beneath the kilim the upholstered seat is generously padded, the bottom of the bench is finished with a continuous single row of brass tacks and the sturdy wooden legs are decoratively turned and varnished. Perfect as extra seating or footstools, these benches can also double up as coffee tables, ideal for piles of magazines and tea trays.
