An eclectic piece of furniture, this Kilim Bench is beautifully decorated and luxuriously comfortable. Handcrafted from Turkish and Pakistani kilims, the featured patterns and motifs help to bring a touch of heritage and warmth to any room. Flashes of bold oranges, deep purples and other unorthodox colourings are woven in clean lines to create a wonderfully abstract pattern. Incredibly vibrant, this bench works great as extra seating, an eye-catching footstool within the sitting room, or simply a decorative centrepiece. While the use of these contrasting colours is more contemporary, the quality of the hardwearing fabric reflects its heritage steeped in artisanal skill – a happy marriage of tradition and modernity.
Hand-woven, woollen kilim rugs have been made in Turkey for centuries. A crucial part of nomadic life, they lined (and line) the floors and walls of tents as well as houses, and were highly valued as dowry pieces. Traditionally woven into kilim furniture are decorative motifs, thought to signify desires or serve as protective symbols. This kilim has been embroidered with the Pitrak motif, an intricate diamond-like geometric design symbolising a burdock plant, which intended to bring forth an abundant harvest in nomadic Turkish societies.
