This adorable small couch has an extraordinarily theatrical look. More than a statement piece, this eye-catching, off-the-wall petite sofa has charm and fantasy, and deserves to be positioned somewhere conspicuous as it will both surprise and delight!
Based on a nineteenth-century style, and covered with vintage kilim and luxurious velvet, the curvaceous Napoleon III Kilim Sofa exudes the irrestistably frivolous drama and party atmosphere of the second empire. It is a small, decadent-looking low couch suitable for a boudoir or reception hall, where it is sure to be a talking point. The reverse view is as beautiful as the front!
The seat back and fixed, sprung seat are covered in durable, rough fabric from an original, ancient kilim, a one-off masterpiece created by hand by the nomads from Anatolia in Asia Minor. Woven from sheep and goat wool, and coloured with vegetable dyes, the pattern reflects the wild country that surrounded these tough but generous and quiet people.
In a dramatic reinterpretation of the past, the ancient kilim fabric is paired with luxurious raspberry-coloured velvet on the arms, sides and back, and a floor-skimming fringe in a complementary trio of shades. Fringing like this is typical of the sumptuous upholstery and drapes of the Napoléon III era, which is also reflected in the shape of the sofa, with its serpentine seat and top.
The sofa also features luxurious touches such as corded trim concealing the seams that matched the fringe, and a continual line of velvet buttoning along the top edge of the arms and back.
A truly special and unique piece of artisan furniture, it was made by hand in a small village in France to high standards of artisanal craftsmanship, using skills passed down through generations. The strong frame is constructed from beechwood cut from the Belgian Ardennes forest, with square-cut, tapering wooden legs stained matt black.
